How to Get a New York CDL

Getting a New York CDL takes a DOT physical, study time with the CDL-10 manual, written knowledge tests, ELDT, a 14-day CLP wait, and a road test. You must be 18 to drive within New York and 21 to drive across state lines or move hazardous materials.

1. Confirm your age: 18 for New York-only driving, 21 for interstate, hazmat, or school-bus operation.
2. Pass a DOT physical with a medical examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
3. Self-certify your driving type with the NY DMV (NA, EA, NI, or EI).
4. Study the New York CDL-10 Commercial Driveru0027s Manual at dmv.ny.gov.
5. Apply for a Commercial Learner Permit at a DMV office. Pay the $10 CLP fee and $40 road test fee.
6. Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80% to pass) and any endorsement knowledge tests.
7. Hold your CLP at least 14 days before scheduling the road test.
8. Complete ELDT with an FMCSA-registered provider. Drivers 18-20 doing Class A must also finish at least 300 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel time.
9. Take and pass the road skills test in the proper vehicle class.
10. Pay the CDL license fee ($164.50 outside MCTD, $180.50 in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District) and receive your New York CDL.
