Required to drive a school bus. Stacked on top of the Passenger (P) endorsement. Additional fingerprint + background check.
What it covers
The School Bus (S) endorsement is required to drive a school bus carrying students to or from school or school-sponsored activities. S is added on top of the Passenger (P) endorsement.
Federal requirements
- Hold the Passenger (P) endorsement (or pass it concurrently).
- Pass the School Bus knowledge test (~20 questions).
- Pass a School Bus skills test in a representative bus.
- Complete state-specific background check and fingerprinting.
- Complete ELDT (federal) for first-time S applicants.

- Memorize loading/unloading procedures, railroad crossing rules, and post-trip inspection (check for sleeping children).
