How to Get a Utah CDL

Getting a Utah CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid Utah noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit CDL-42 self-certification to the Driver License Division.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
4. Study the Utah Commercial Driver License Handbook.
5. Visit a Driver License Division office, pay the $52 fee, and pass the knowledge tests.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the $78 three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and the road test.
9. Receive your Utah Commercial Driver License.
