How to Get a South Carolina CDL

To get a South Carolina CDL, you study the SC CDL Manual, get a DOT medical card, pass knowledge tests, hold a CLP for at least 14 days, complete ELDT, then pass the skills test.

1. Download and study the South Carolina CDL Manual from dmv.sc.gov.
2. Confirm you meet age rules: 18 for intrastate, 21 for interstate or hazmat.
3. Get a DOT medical exam from a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
4. Submit the SCDMV medical certification form along with the FMCSA exam results.
5. Visit an SCDMV branch with identity, residency, and Social Security documents.
6. Pay the $15 CLP application fee, $2 per knowledge test, and $2.50 CLP issuance fee.
7. Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80% to pass) plus any endorsement tests.
8. Receive your Commercial Learner Permit and hold it for at least 14 days.
9. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training through an FMCSA-registered provider.
10. Schedule and pass the CDL skills test.
11. Pay the $2.50 per year CDL fee (commonly $20 for 8 years) and receive your South Carolina CDL.
