How to Get a Oregon CDL

Getting an Oregon CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

  1. Hold a valid Oregon noncommercial driver license.
  2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit your Medical Examineru0027s Certificate to the Oregon DMV.
  3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
  4. Study the Oregon Commercial Driver Manual.
  5. Visit an Oregon DMV office, pay the $40 CLP fee, and pass the $10 knowledge tests.
  6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
  7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
  8. Schedule and pass the $145 three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and the road test.
  9. Pay the $160 CDL fee and receive your Oregon Commercial Driver License.
