How to Get a District of Columbia CDL

To get a DC CDL, you study the DC CDL Manual, gather identity and residency documents, get a DOT medical certificate, pass the knowledge tests, hold a CLP for at least 14 days, complete Entry-Level Driver Training, then pass the skills test.

1. Download and study the DC DMV CDL Manual from dmv.dc.gov.
2. Confirm you meet DC age rules: 18 for intrastate, 21 for interstate or hazmat.
3. Get a DOT medical exam from a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
4. Self-certify your operating category (interstate or intrastate, excepted or non-excepted).
5. Visit the Deanwood Road Test/CDL Services Office with all required documents.
6. Pay knowledge test fees ($10 per test) and pass the required tests.
7. Pay the CLP fee ($78) and receive your Commercial Learner Permit.
8. Hold your CLP for at least 14 days.
9. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training through an FMCSA Training Provider Registry provider.
10. Schedule and pay for the CDL skills test ($10).
11. Pass the skills test, then pay the CDL fee ($117) to receive your license.
