How to Get a Washington CDL

Getting a Washington CDL takes several steps. You will need a valid Washington driver license, a DOT medical card, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and passing scores on the required knowledge and skills tests. The DOL recommends pairing the CDL Guide with a formal training program.

1. Hold a valid Washington noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam with an FMCSA National Registry medical examiner and submit the Medical Examineru0027s Certificate.
3. Self-certify your driver type (interstate or intrastate, non-excepted or excepted) with the DOL.
4. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, if this is your first Class A or B CDL or first H, P, or S endorsement.
5. Pass the required CDL knowledge tests and pay the CLP fee.
6. Receive your Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP), valid for 180 days.
7. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before scheduling the skills test.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test (vehicle inspection, basic control skills, road test).
