How to Get a Vermont CDL

To get a Vermont CDL you must be at least 18 to drive inside the state and 21 to drive across state lines or move hazardous materials. Plan on a DOT physical, written knowledge tests, ELDT, a 14-day permit hold, and a skills test in the type of vehicle you plan to drive.

1. Confirm you meet the age rule: 18 intrastate, 21 interstate / hazmat / many passenger jobs.
2. Pass a DOT physical with an examiner on the FMCSA National Registry and receive a Medical Examineru0027s Certificate.
3. Self-certify your driving category with the Vermont DMV.
4. Study the Vermont CDL Manual (form VN-111) from dmv.vermont.gov.
5. Apply for a Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP) at a Vermont DMV office and pay the $18 permit fee plus $39 for the general knowledge written test.
6. Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80% to pass) and any endorsement knowledge tests.
7. Hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test.
8. Complete ELDT with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
9. Schedule the skills test (state-side fee $39 plus a $29 scheduling deposit).
10. Pass the three-part skills test and pay the CDL license fee ($72 for 2 years or $108 for 4 years).
