How to Get a Rhode Island CDL

Getting a Rhode Island CDL requires a DOT physical, a 14-day Commercial Learner's Permit hold, Entry-Level Driver Training, and passing the road test. You must be 18 for intrastate driving and 21 for interstate or hazmat operation. Plan an in-person appointment at the Cranston DMV.

1. Confirm your age: 18 for intrastate, 21 for interstate, hazmat, or many passenger jobs.
2. Pass a DOT physical with an FMCSA-registered medical examiner.
3. Self-certify your driving type with the RI DMV using the Self-Certification Form.
4. Study the Rhode Island CDL Manual from dmv.ri.gov.
5. Call the Cranston CDL Office at (401) 462-4368 to book a CLP appointment.
6. Pay the $72.50 CLP fee and $10 per written knowledge exam (general knowledge plus any endorsement).
7. Pass the General Knowledge test (50 questions, 80% to pass) and any endorsement tests.
8. Hold your CLP at least 14 days. RI CLPs are valid one year and not renewable.
9. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with an FMCSA-listed provider before the skills test.
10. Pay the $100 road/skills test fee and take the test at 400 Romano Vineyard Way, North Kingstown.
11. Pay the $12.50 CDL application fee at the Cranston DMV and receive your Rhode Island CDL.
