How to Get a Pennsylvania CDL

Getting a Pennsylvania CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid Pennsylvania noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and self-certify your medical status with PennDOT.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. This is required before taking the CLP knowledge test for a first-time Class A or B CDL.
4. Study Pennsylvania Publication 223, the Commercial Driveru0027s Manual.
5. Apply for a Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP) at a PennDOT Driver License Center and pass the required knowledge tests.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and the road test.
