How to Get a North Dakota CDL

Getting a North Dakota CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid North Dakota noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit your Medical Examineru0027s Certificate to NDDOT.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
4. Study the 2025-2027 North Dakota CDL Manual.
5. Visit an NDDOT driver license site, pay the $15 CLP fee, and pass the $5 knowledge tests (one attempt per day).
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Pay the $5 road test fee and schedule the modernized three-part skills test (effective December 1, 2025).
9. Pay the $15 CDL fee and receive your 4-year North Dakota Commercial Driver License.
