How to Get a North Carolina CDL

To get a North Carolina CDL, study the N.C. CDL Manual, get a DOT medical card, pass the knowledge tests, hold a CLP for at least 14 days, complete Entry-Level Driver Training, and pass the skills test.

1. Download and study the N.C. Commercial Driver License Manual.
2. Confirm you meet age rules: 18 for intrastate, 21 for interstate or hazmat.
3. Get a DOT medical exam from a Certified Medical Examiner and submit it to NCDMV (form CDL-MED-1 if needed).
4. Bring required identity, residency, and Social Security documents to a NCDMV CDL office.
5. Pass the General Knowledge test plus any endorsement tests. You have 1 hour and may miss up to 10 questions.
6. Pay the application ($43.25) and permit fee ($21.50) and receive your Commercial Learner Permit (valid 180 days).
7. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days.
8. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training through an FMCSA Training Provider Registry provider.
9. Schedule and pass the CDL skills test (pre-trip inspection, basic controls, on-road).
10. Pay the CDL fee ($25.50 per year of the license period; $127.50 for 5 years) and receive your North Carolina CDL.
