How to Get a New Jersey CDL

Getting a New Jersey CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid New Jersey basic driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit your Medical Examineru0027s Certificate to the MVC.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
4. Study the New Jersey CDL Manual.
5. Visit an MVC licensing center, pay the $125 test receipt fee, and pass the required knowledge tests to get your Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP).
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and the road test.
9. Pay the $42 CDL fee (plus $2 per endorsement) and receive your New Jersey Commercial Driver License.
