How to Get a New Hampshire CDL

To earn a New Hampshire CDL you must be at least 18 (intrastate) or 21 (interstate or hazmat), pass a DOT physical, study the official manual, pass written knowledge tests, complete ELDT, and pass a skills test in the type of vehicle you plan to drive.

1. Confirm you meet the age rule: 18 for driving only inside New Hampshire, 21 for interstate, hazmat, or many passenger jobs.
2. Get a DOT physical from an examiner on the FMCSA National Registry and receive a Medical Examineru0027s Certificate.
3. Self-certify your driving type (interstate/intrastate, excepted/non-excepted) with the NH DMV.
4. Download and study the New Hampshire CDL Manual from dmv.nh.gov.
5. Apply for a Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) at a NH DMV office and pass the General Knowledge test plus any endorsement knowledge tests needed.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days. CLPs are valid for 180 days and can be renewed once.
7. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with an FMCSA-registered provider before scheduling the road test.
8. Practice with a CDL-licensed driver in the cab.
9. Schedule and pass the skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving.
10. Pay the $60 CDL license fee plus $10 per endorsement to receive your New Hampshire CDL.
