How to Get a Michigan CDL

Getting a Michigan CDL takes study, a DOT medical exam, training with an FMCSA-approved provider, and skills testing through a private driver testing business. You apply for the CLP at a Secretary of State office and return there to add endorsements and update your license after passing the road test.

1. Download and study the Michigan Commercial Driveru0027s License Manual.
2. Get a DOT physical and Medical Examineru0027s Certificate.
3. Visit a Secretary of State office to apply for the Commercial Learneru0027s Permit.
4. Pass the General Knowledge written test and any endorsement knowledge tests.
5. Receive your Commercial Learneru0027s Permit.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days while practicing with a supervising CDL holder.
7. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training with an FMCSA-registered provider.
8. Schedule and pass the CDL skills test with an approved Michigan driver testing business.
9. Return to a Secretary of State office to pay endorsement fees ($5 each) and update your license.
