How to Get a Maryland CDL

To get a Maryland CDL, you study the state CDL Manual, pass the required knowledge tests, get a CLP, finish Entry-Level Driver Training, hold the CLP for at least 14 days, then pass the skills test at an MVA office.

1. Read the Maryland CDL Manual (DL-151) from the MVA website.
2. Get a DOT medical exam and provide a Medical Examiner Certificate to the MVA.
3. Visit an MVA office with proof of identity, age, residency, and a Social Security number.
4. Pass the General Knowledge knowledge test, plus tests for any endorsements you need.
5. Pay the Commercial Learner Permit fee and receive your CLP.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
8. Schedule and pass the CDL skills test, which includes a vehicle inspection, basic controls, and an on-road drive.
9. Pay the CDL fee at the MVA to receive your Maryland Commercial Driver License.
