How to Get a Maine CDL

Getting a Maine CDL takes several steps. You must be at least 18 to drive within Maine and 21 to drive across state lines or haul hazardous materials. Plan on studying the Maine CDL Manual, getting a DOT medical card, completing ELDT, passing the written tests for your CLP, practicing for two weeks, and then taking the skills test.

1. Confirm you meet the age rule: 18 for intrastate driving, 21 for interstate, hazmat, or some passenger work.
2. Get a DOT physical from a certified medical examiner and obtain your Medical Examineru0027s Certificate (medical card).
3. Download and study the Maine CDL Manual from the BMV website.
4. Apply for a Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP) at a Maine BMV office and pass the General Knowledge test plus any endorsement tests you need.
5. Hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test.
6. Complete federally required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
7. Practice driving a commercial vehicle with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control, and road test.
9. Pay the CDL license fee at the BMV and receive your Maine Commercial Driver License.
