How to Get a Kentucky CDL

Getting a Kentucky CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid Kentucky noncommercial operator license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit Form TC 94-169 to self-certify your driving category with the Division of Driver Licensing.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
4. Study the Kentucky CDL Manual.
5. Visit a Driver Licensing Regional Office, pay the $11 commercial permit fee, and pass the required knowledge tests.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test with the Kentucky State Police (call 800-542-5990).
9. Pay the $40 CDL fee and receive your Kentucky Commercial Driver License.
