How to Get a Illinois CDL

Getting an Illinois CDL takes study, a DOT medical exam, training, and testing. You first study the Illinois CDL Study Guide, pass written tests for a CLP, complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training, then pass the three-part skills test scheduled through Illinois Fast Pass.

1. Download and study the Illinois CDL Study Guide from ilsos.gov.
2. Get a DOT physical and a valid Medical Examineru0027s Certificate.
3. Pass the vision test and submit a driving record check.
4. Pass the General Knowledge written test and any endorsement knowledge tests.
5. Pay the $50 Commercial Learneru0027s Permit fee.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training with an FMCSA-registered provider.
8. Schedule pre-trip, basic control, and on-road skills tests through Illinois Fast Pass at ilsos.gov.
9. Pass all three skills test sections.
10. Pay the $60 CDL fee to receive your Illinois CDL.
