How to Get a Idaho CDL

Getting an Idaho CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a DOT medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid Idaho noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit your Medical Examineru0027s Certificate via the ITD CDL Self-Certification system.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
4. Study the Idaho Commercial Driveru0027s License Manual.
5. Visit a county DMV office, pay the $29 CLP fee, and pass the $5-per-test written knowledge tests.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
7. Practice driving with a qualified CDL holder seated next to you.
8. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test. The county collects a $10 skills test fee; the CDL Examiner charges separately.
9. Pay the $40 4-year CDL fee (or $60 for 8 years) and receive your Idaho Commercial Driver License.
