How to Get a Hawaii CDL

Getting a Hawaii CDL is a multi-step process that runs through your county licensing office. You will need a valid Hawaii driver license, a DOT medical card, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and passing scores on the required knowledge and skills tests.

1. Hold a valid Hawaii noncommercial driver license.
2. Complete a DOT physical with an FMCSA National Registry medical examiner and obtain a Medical Examineru0027s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876).
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, if this is your first Class A or B CDL or first H, P, or S endorsement.
4. Submit the Hawaii CDL Application Form and required documents at your county CDL office.
5. Pay the knowledge test fee and pass the required knowledge tests to receive your Commercial Learneru0027s Permit.
6. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test. The CLP is valid for 180 days.
7. Schedule and pay the $50 Practical Test fee. Pass all three parts (Vehicle Inspection, Basic Controls Skills Test, Road Test) on the same day.
8. Pay the CDL fee and receive your Hawaii Commercial Driver License.
