How to Get a California CDL

Getting a California CDL takes several steps. You will need a regular driver license first, a medical exam, federal Entry-Level Driver Training, and you must pass both knowledge and skills tests. Plan for the process to take several weeks.

1. Hold a valid California noncommercial Class C driver license.
2. Complete a DOT medical exam and submit the MER Form (MCSA-5875) and Medical Examineru0027s Certificate (MCSA-5876) to the DMV.
3. Complete federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) with a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. This is required before taking the CLP knowledge test for a first-time Class A or B CDL.
4. Apply for a Commercial Learneru0027s Permit (CLP) at the DMV and pass the required knowledge tests.
5. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the skills test.
6. Complete at least 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training, with at least 10 hours on public roads. Submit the DL 1236 certification.
7. Schedule and pass the three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and the road test.
8. Pay the CDL fee and receive your California Commercial Driver License.
