How to Get a Alabama CDL

To get an Alabama CDL, you study the Alabama CDL Manual, get a DOT medical card, pass knowledge tests, hold a CLP for at least 14 days, complete ELDT, then pass the skills test.

1. Download and study the Alabama CDL Manual from alea.gov.
2. Confirm you meet age rules: 18 for intrastate, 21 for interstate or hazmat.
3. Get a DOT medical exam from a Certified Medical Examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
4. Submit your Medical Examiner Certificate to ALEA and self-certify your operating category.
5. Visit an ALEA Driver License office with identity, residency, and Social Security documents.
6. Pay the $25 knowledge test fee and pass the General Knowledge test plus endorsement tests (80% to pass).
7. Pay the $36.25 CLP issuance fee and receive your Commercial Learner Permit.
8. Hold the CLP for at least 14 days.
9. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (theory first) from an FMCSA Training Provider Registry provider.
10. Pay the $20 CDL skills test fee and pass the skills test.
11. Pay the CDL license fee ($66.25 for Class A, $56.25 for Class B, $36.25 for Class C) to receive your Alabama CDL.
